Air Filtration System Services in Orem

Skylake Heating & Air - Air Filtration Systems

Are you concerned about your home’s air? Do you or your family members suffer from indoor or outdoor allergies? One of the big benefits of using a centralized heating and cooling system is that you can take care of these kinds of issues by working with one of our indoor air quality experts and adding an air filtration system to your HVAC.

Whole-home air filtration is far more effective than room-by-room air filtration. One of the major reasons for this is that a whole-home air filtration system integrates seamlessly with your existing HVAC system, making it easy and efficient to clean the air in your home. However, not all air filters are made alike, so it’s important to work with a specialist, like the ones at Skylake Heating & Air, who can assess your needs and determine which type of air filter will be best for you and your home.

How Do I Know How Effective a Certain Air Filter Will Be?

While you should always work with a trained expert when choosing an upgraded filter for your home, there is a scale system that will tell you how effective a certain kind of air filter will be. This scale system is known as MERV, and it runs from 1 (being the lowest) to 20 (being the highest). It may seem like a simple deduction to just go with 20 and be done with it, but that’s not exactly how MERV works. Yes, 20 is the most effective MERV rating, but this kind of filter is used in places like hospitals. Odds are, you don’t need a filter that strong for your home.

The standard air filter your HVAC is equipped with tends to range anywhere from 1—4 MERV, clearly very low. Generally, for those homeowners looking to improve their indoor air, air filters with a MERV range of 5—8 works well. If you need relief from allergies, you’ll want to consider an air filter with a MERV of 9—12. Any air filter with a MERV higher than 12 can restrict the air flow in your system, so it’s important to first consult with one of our experts.

Are Upgraded Air Filters Made Differently?

The main reason upgraded air filters are more effective at capturing and trapping contaminants is that the filter media is made of better quality material. Specifically, the weave in an upgraded filter is tighter, making it harder for particles and contaminants to pass through. Also, many upgraded air filters have multiple v–folds in the filter media materials. V–folds also make it more difficult for particles and contaminants to pass through as the particles have to pass through fold after fold.

One thing to keep in mind is that while upgraded filters are far more effective at capturing particles, they aren’t impervious to needing replacement. Just as your standard air filter needs to be replaced every three months, so, too, does your upgraded air filter.
