The 3 Components of Ductless Cooling
Unlike a traditional split system AC where you have a sizeable outdoor unit and sizeable indoor unit, along with ductwork, the components of a ductless cooling system are pretty straightforward:
- The outdoor unit
- Very similar to that of a traditional split system air conditioner, the outdoor unit contains the compressor, condenser, and condenser fan. A single outdoor unit for a ductless system can support up to four indoor blowers.
- The indoor blowers
- The indoor blowers of a ductless cooling system are about 3 ft. long and mount flush against walls and ceilings. Each blower contains its own air filter, set of coils and fan, and each operates independently.
- The conduit
- The conduit is a bundle that connects each indoor blower to the outdoor unit. The bundle contains a power cord, refrigerant line, and condensate drain line.
Can I Have Ductless Cooling with Ducted Cooling?
The short answer is: yes, you can. While most air conditioning systems operate singly, ductless cooling systems offer a flexibility other types of AC systems don’t. Why would you combine both systems? Some homeowners struggle to cool certain areas of their home, like a small library or home office space. Adding a single AC blower can make all the difference between being comfortable and not being comfortable.
Another instance where you might have both types of systems in your home is if you add an expansion onto your house. Accommodating for ductwork can be expensive, especially when you have to merge new ductwork with your existing system. With a ductless system, you don’t have to worry about this extra expense—which can be substantial—and have the cooling you need in your new space with a ductless unit.
